There’s a quick way to identify what you have before you even call: look at the roller bracket where it bolts to the gate frame. Viking stamps a small part code starting with “VH” on most hinge brackets from 2005 forward. Older units won’t have the stamp, but measuring the roller diameter with a tape measure gets you the same answer. For most Arcadia homeowners, we recommend OEM Viking parts when the gate is under 10 years old. For older gates, a well-made aftermarket roller with a sealed bearing often outlasts what Viking originally shipped, and it costs about 30% less. Signs Your Viking Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate drags or scrapes the driveway. This is almost always a collapsed or flattened bottom roller. Once the nylon wheel wears through to the bearing race, the gate frame itself starts scraping. You’ll see a shiny wear line on the concrete.
- A popping or clunking sound when the gate moves. That’s the roller binding against a worn hinge pin, then releasing. It sounds like a rock getting caught under the gate, but it’s metal on metal at the hinge point.
- The gate sits crooked or leans inward. Hinges carry all the gate’s weight. When the top hinge pin wears into an oval, the gate leans. Adjusting the opener won’t fix it, and neither will tightening the hinge bolts if the pin itself is shot.
- The gap between gate and post changes as it swings. This is a hinge barrel that has wallowed out. The gate swings fine for half the arc, then drops noticeably. A worn Viking hinge barrel is one of the most common causes of a gate that won’t latch.
- Visible rust or cracking at the hinge plate welds. Coastal-adjacent humidity and Arcadia’s summer heat cycles are hard on welds. Once a weld starts cracking, the hinge can tear free entirely, and a falling gate section is a serious hazard.

You can check a few things safely. Look at the rollers with the gate closed. If you see a flat spot or cracked nylon, that’s your answer. You can also lift the gate slightly at the free end: movement upward means the hinge pins or barrels are worn. What you should not do is unbolt a hinge on a gate that weighs 400 pounds or more while it’s still attached to the opener. Gates under tension don’t give you a warning before they drop, and a falling gate edge is unforgiving.
