Which BFT Models This Applies To

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate scrapes or drags at the latch end. The weld at the top hinge has started to let go and the frame is pulling away from the post. The gate sags because the hinge post connection is failing, not because the gate is suddenly heavier. A sagging gate hangs lower the farther you get from the hinge, and it will only get worse as the torn weld works back and forth every time the operator cycles.
• You see a clean, shiny crack running through old paint or rust. That is a fresh fatigue crack, and it is this gate telling you the steel has been worked past its endurance. It usually starts at a weld toe, where the metal gets stiffest and the stress concentrates. Ignore it and the next cycle can tear the crack the rest of the way through.
• The BFT operator arms surges or stalls partway through travel. The gate frame is flexing because a structural weld has failed, and the operator is trying to push a hinge that is no longer rigid. • You can hear a rhythmic click or pop as the gate moves. That is the torn weld opening and closing under load, two pieces of steel smacking together on every pass. It is not an opener noise. DIY or Call Us?

We understand the impulse to weld it yourself, but we have to say this plainly: a gate under tension can hurt you. When a weld lets go on one side of a heavy steel gate, the other side is holding the entire weight, and the moment you cut or loosen that remaining hinge, the gate can drop, swing, or bind in a way you cannot control with bare hands. Arcadia driveways slope, and a gate that lets go on a slope will travel. Do not stand under it, and do not put your face at the weld line to look. We have seen what happens when a gate comes down on an arm, and you will not win that fight.

What you can safely check: stand with the gate closed and lift the latch end. If it moves more than a quarter inch, you have a hinge or post problem.
