FAAC Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Arcadia Owner’s Guide

Most FAAC keypad and intercom failures in Arcadia come down to three things: corroded contacts from our hard water and morning marine layer, a cracked membrane from years of direct sun on the Santa Anita-facing side of a property, or a power surge that took out the intercom board before the breaker could trip. We stock FAAC-compatible keypads and intercom modules on the truck, and a typical repair runs $185-$420 installed depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad, an intercom handset, or the whole entry station. Most Arcadia jobs are done in one visit, and if you’re locked out entirely, we answer the phone around the clock.

The way owners usually find out is simple: the keypad beeps but the gate won’t move, the intercom rings but nobody can hear you, or the whole entry station goes dark overnight. Tell me what it is doing and I will tell you what it needs - no runaround.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

We work on the full FAAC residential and light-commercial lineup you’ll actually find around Arcadia: the 390, 400, 402, 412, 415, 422, 455 D, 770, 844, and the older 740/750 series openers. The keypads and intercoms tied to these systems include FAAC’s XP series keypads, the DigiKey and DigiCard entry stations, and the legacy FAAC PhotoBeam-era intercom handsets that are now getting hard to source as OEM parts.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people miss: FAAC changed their keypad wiring protocol between the older 740/750 generation and the newer 400-series and 770-series boards. An XP 15 keypad wired for an older board will not talk to a 455 D control board without a protocol adapter or a direct board-level wiring change. If you’re buying a used keypad off an auction site, check the model sticker on the back and match the last two digits to your board revision. We keep both generations on hand so we’re not guessing at your gate.

We’re an independent service company, not affiliated with FAAC, which means we get to tell you the truth about parts: for keypads, the OEM FAAC unit is your best bet because the membrane and UV rating are matched to the housing. For intercom modules, a quality aftermarket equivalent often costs 30-40% less and performs identically, and we’ll show you both prices before any work starts. The price is quoted and agreed before we touch a screwdriver, and that number doesn’t move.

Signs Your FAAC Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

  • Keypad beeps but gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad is sending a signal but the control board isn’t receiving it, almost always a corroded wire at the terminal block or a failed relay on the board. In Arcadia, we see this most often on homes north of Foothill where sprinkler overspray wicks into the keypad conduit.
  • Some buttons work, others don’t. The membrane has micro-tears from UV exposure and temperature swings. You press 3 and the gate opens; you press 5 and nothing. The fix is a new membrane or keypad, not a new gate motor, and we’ll tell you that straight.
  • Intercom rings but voice is garbled or one-way. This is typically a failing capacitor on the intercom board or a corroded speaker connection. If you can hear the visitor but they can’t hear you, it’s the microphone circuit; the reverse points to the speaker. We test both on the bench before quoting the repair.
  • Entry station goes completely dark after a storm or power flicker. A nearby lightning strike or a DWP transformer surge can fry the intercom board before the breaker trips. We see this on the south end of Arcadia near the county line more than anywhere else, and the fix is usually a board replacement plus a surge protector on the low-voltage line.
  • Keypad works only when it’s cold or only when it’s warm. This is a thermal expansion issue in the solder joints or a failing voltage regulator. It works in the morning, quits by noon, and comes back at dusk. Don’t wait until it quits for good at 11 p.m. on a Friday.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we charge in Arcadia, and it’s the same price you’ll see on the invoice whether we quote it over the phone or standing in your driveway:

Service Installed Price Range
Keypad replacement (FAAC XP series or equivalent) $185 - $310
Intercom handset or module repair $220 - $380
Full entry station (keypad + intercom) replacement $340 - $420
Board-level diagnostic and wiring repair $95 - $160

What drives the range is access (a keypad mounted in a stucco pillar takes longer than a surface-mount box), wiring condition, and whether we’re matching an existing FAAC board or updating wiring at the same time. Every quote includes the part, the labor, and a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we come back and make it right, no runaround and no arguments.

You’re not paying a trip charge if you’re inside the county. And if you have a written estimate from another company, we’ll give you a free second opinion before you spend a dollar with us.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things you can safely check before calling us. First, confirm the keypad and intercom have power: is there a green or red LED lit anywhere on the entry station? Second, check the breaker labeled “gate” or “gate operator” in your panel. If those two things are fine and the keypad still won’t respond, the problem is in the wiring or the board, and that’s where you should stop.

Here’s why: FAAC keypads run on low voltage, but they terminate at a control board that also carries the 110V or 220V side of the gate operator. Getting into that panel without knowing where the high-voltage terminals are is how a $200 keypad becomes a $600 board replacement, or worse. We’ve opened more than one Arcadia panel where a homeowner or handyman left a wire crossed and the board was cooked. Fixing that mess takes twice as long as the original repair would have.

If you’ve checked power and the problem is still there, call us at (626) 628-9548. We’ll get eyes on it fast, quote it before we touch it, and you’ll know exactly what you’re paying before the first screw comes out.
